| | Why Sponsor A Gambian Child | |
Part of our role is to organise and administer the sponsorship of children of all ages in the Gambia.
The Gambian Goverment provides free schools for primary school children (ages 7 - 12) but it does not enforce attendance. Many parents can not afford the associated costs of school attendance, such as uniform and material costs.
Nursery Schools (ages 2 - 7) are not recognised at all by the Gambian Government and no funding is provided for anything.
Secondary school is not funded and many are classed as private establishments. Costs start from £35 per term (3 terms a year) and have to be paid for by the childs family (unless they are lucky enough to be sponsored). Girls often lose out on this level of education if they have a male sibling. All uniform and associated costs have to be met by the family as well.
Sponsoring a child at any level is an investment in their future, once a child is sponsored we will make every possible effort to support them and find continued sponsorship through their journey into adulthood and full time or self employment.
No deductions are made from the sponsorship for administration. Our administrative costs will be met by Membership fees and from tax we recover through Gift Aid. All sponsorship payments therefore go 100% to their development and the work done for and around the sponsored child.
